You can’t run from the shadow. But you can invite it to dance.
Sometimes we have to travel to the edge of ourselves to take a new look at our center. Our lives are known by contrasts. Shadows make it possible to see light; similarly, light reminds us of the shadows. To really see the beauty of life, we must bear witness to its dark places.
As I work more and more with painting, I realize the depth of any piece comes with a well-constructed dance of shadow and light. If I go further into this dance, I am often rewarded by something richer than I originally imagined.
I call this painting Finding Center. For me the albino donkey spoke a language of serenity that I needed to paint, especially in a moment when I felt anxious. It’s as if he said: slow down, smell the roses, see the color. I am left with the fact that no matter what my challenge, there is another possibility. My hope for you is you never forget that even loss and challenge bring opportunities for joy and new beginnings.
