There is a simple fact in life. You wake up and eventually you go to sleep. In between is what you do with it all. Make it work or simply complain that it doesn’t. Make it work is a much better approach. As the saying goes – Got lemons? Make lemonade.
Life is not easy. We know that. It takes ingenuity, and initiative, and a whole lot of gumption to move forward when everything around you tells you to give up. We can collapse and take pity on ourselves when the realities are difficult, or we can stand tall and dare to be greater than the very thing we face.
A garden does all of this. It stands tall in the face of adversity. Despite the elements, it can flourish if given the chance to do so. It takes an advocate—hopefully the gardener –who is willing to stand up against the forces that threaten to topple the creation that pushes through in spite of adversity. Whether faced with rain, or drought, or disease, the garden flourishes if we allow it a chance to be more than the obstacles it faces.
Enter the Canna –colorful and proud. Resiliant actually, even in the face of forces that defy its existence. It breaks through the ground and claims its place in the sun. We should remember this when forces say to us we are not good enough, or it’s hopeless, or we’re stupid to consider the impossible. If Canna bowed to such dismal considerations, it would never be as boldly beautiful as it is now. Its brief, but brilliant moment in the continuum of time is testimony to its endurance. And even after its last bloom fades to the ground and its roots fall to a deep sleep, it always comes back, time and time again, standing tall, regal and proud, not afraid to take on life, reminding us that we would do well to be as bold and take our place in the sun.
