Chaos has a place. In all our travels, did we recognize the possibility that mayhem teaches something? So I sit in my adirondack chair, contemplating the possibility. I consider that I missed something in the reality called my life — that maybe chaos has a place and for good reason.
Merlin creates chaos in our life. He runs to and fro without regard to the in-between. He is a god-send, actually. A reminder that we humans need to chill and perhaps consider a different reality – one involving humor, forgiveness (a basset in motion often requires such), maybe even space to honor the contrary aspects of our demand for perfection.
Merlin cares for nothing but the moment. His joy exists in the experience of the run, especially when chased by me, the smell of compost in which he rolls with carefree abandon, his nature to wash the eyes of Rocky or Bond with uncommon tenderness. When so doing, he is just being Merlin, doing what he does, being a dog, and being something else we should consider in our repertoire — spontaneous.
